The book I am listening to is called The Know-It-All by A J Jacobs. It’s about a man in his mid-thirties who reads the Encyclopedia Britannica in order to be the smartest person in the world. The first thing that struck me was why would a grown-up want to read the EB and then why would be think that reading the EB make him the smartest person in the world? I read the EB when I was a kid. It took me about 3 years. I started when I was about 9. I grew up in a very remote area in Africa, and the only books I had to read were the ones we had at home. Not even the school had a library. I quickly read all the books in our house and so started on the EB.

The book is entertaining in parts. I enjoy his description of his fertility problems and his domestic life, his meeting with Alex Trebek, and his quirky father The facts he throws out from the EB are a little, well, obvious. When he acts surprised to learn something, (for example patches worn by men in 17/18 C) I have to think to myself that I don’t think he has read very widely.

I have been reading a LOT about nutrition and I had a question about Vitamin E so I wrote to Diana Dyer. She actually wrote back! I was so impressed. I have found her book and website so helpful. She is both a source of information and a source of support.

Quilting continues slowly. Bought large quantities of dark green fabric to make son a cloak. And he is nagging.
